From 2007 to Today: How the CrossFit Games Redefined Fitness

The 2025 CrossFit Games season is just around the corner. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit the remarkable journey of the CrossFit Games. From its humble beginnings in 2007 to becoming the ultimate test of fitness, this competition has continuously evolved, pushing athletes to new heights and redefining what it means to be the Fittest on Earth.

“Who is the fittest?”, “How do you know?” These were the questions that sparked the inception of the CrossFit Games back then.

The inaugural CrossFit Games took place in 2007, where competitors faced a raw and unpredictable set of challenges designed to push their physical and mental limits. Athletes had little to no idea what awaited them, reinforcing the core CrossFit principle of being prepared for the unknown and unknowable. Over the years, this unpredictability has remained a defining characteristic of the Games, forcing competitors to train year-round for events that could involve anything from Olympic weightlifting to ocean swims, obstacle courses, and gymnastics.

As the Games gained traction, they moved to larger venues, including the StubHub Center in California, before settling in Madison, Wisconsin, from 2017 to 2023. The expansion of the competition mirrored CrossFit’s global rise, attracting thousands of participants and millions of fans worldwide. Each year, the Games evolved to introduce new movements, heavier weights, and tougher tests, ensuring that the competition remained the pinnacle of fitness.

The Journey to the Games

The road to the CrossFit Games is anything but easy. Athletes must progress through multiple stages of qualification:

  • The Open: A three-week worldwide event held in thousands of CrossFit affiliates and home gyms, where athletes of all skill levels can participate.

  • Quarterfinals: The top 10% of individuals and age-group competitors, along with the top 25% of teams, advance to an intense online competition with more advanced workouts.

  • Semifinals: The final step before the Games, where top athletes from different regions battle for a limited number of qualifying spots.

  • The Games: The ultimate test, where only the best of the best go head-to-head in a week-long fitness spectacle.
